Autostick73,
Nice indeed. Got any side shots? Meaty looking wheels I think?

That is a reflection on the right front fender not a dent   I also changed the front tire size.  I went to a 155/60/15 from a 205/50/15 because it was rubbing.

I believe it is a charcoal canister part of the emissions system.

Bookwus

Hiya 73,

Indeed it is!

This was a filter and much like oil and air filters it needed to be changed out every so often.  VW recommended that it be replced every 40,000 miles.  Most/many/practically all of these found in our older cars have NOT received that regular maintenance and as a result, are no longer functional.  If you want to test yours, all you need do is remove the canister and, while holding a finger over the small inlet, blow through the larger inlet on the same side.  You should be able to do this EASILY on a functioning filter.  The more clogged up it is with dirt, crud, moisture, etc the harder it will be to blow through it.

If it is a non-funtional, don't worry.  It can be rehabbed, or you can buy a replacement for it.  If you'd like to know more about either alternative zap an e-mail my way.  I have info and pictures which can assist.

Hi Guys I'm new here.

Here's our Space Blue '70 Semi Auto that my wife and I own.

We picked it up for $1250 a couple of years ago and we have had very little trouble with it. The only things we have had to do were change the brake pads and shoes and fix the switch on the shifter. Apart from that it has been great.

In a few months it will be coming off the road for a full restoration (body off the pan). We are going to go with the original paint colours (including the white roof, which is original).

Bookwus

Hiya 70,

Welcome!

Space Blue?

In 1970 VW offered only two colors of blue worldwide.  Cobalt Blue (L630) was a deep rich blue and Diamond Blue (L50B) was a lighter pastel like blue very much like what your car is now sporting.  VW did not paint any two-tone Bugs.  All were one color only.

I offer this only because you seem to be under the impression that your current paint job is original as it came from the factory.  While the blue color I'm looking at may be Diamond Blue (and maybe not - it's hard to tell on a computer monitor) the car most definitely would not have had a white top.  But paint it any color that YOU like.  After all it's you car, and it should reflect your tastes.

By the way, very nice looking car.  Looks lot like autostick 73's up above.  Even the wheels are similar!

Yes
very nice...

VW in Australia painted cars with local paint and didn't seem to use normal VW colors..
and Not many colors to pick from either...

I can only remember seeing two black VWs in the late 60s
One was a 1965 beetle  and the other a 1967 fastback
both in the same family...  lol...

but ALL Autosticks were fully imported.. from Western Germany

so the colors would have been the normal German colors..

Never seen a beetle with a white roof,,,

still looks OK...

cheers

I have the papers from the original owner. They must have asked for the white roof. The white paint is wearing thin now and you can see the original blue underneath. My guess is that the dealer must have had it painted for them.

This is paint colour sticker from underneath the spare tyre...

Hi, When it comes to Volkswagens

VW Australasia used local paint suppliers Namely DULUX and BERGER Paints.

but that is very strange, as ALL Autosticks were all made in Western Germany...

What does your metal badge say there?
Made in Western Germany??

This one has got Me beat...!!!

SPACE BLUE has got Me too.... Help Sean...[/glow]
