Having alot of trouble

Hey guys,
It has been a while since my last post and a few things have changed.   Well first off, I tried to change the vacuum hoses and didn't get the right ones and in the process broken the spigot off the vacuum canister.    I had a figured out that if I just plug the hose going to the canister I could shift but the car idles really bad and is hard to shift.   I really need help with this because I am in the process of down sizing my car fleet and need the beetle be reliable.  Thanks in advance.

Hello there!

The purpose of the vacuum canister is to hold a vacuum reserve to properly operate the vacuum servo so the engine vacuum is not depleted. Without the canister being connected, the vacuum to operate the servo comes directly off of the intake manifold on the engine. The intake manifold is small and not able to hold a large vaolume of air/vacuum. The carburetor requires constant vacuum to operate properly. By using the engine intake manifold as the vacuum "canister" you have taken away the vacuum in the manifold, thus preventing the carb from properly operating giving you a crappy idle.

You will need to find another vacuum canister or try and have yours repaired, or the engine/transmission will not operate correctly.

You have found out the reason for the tank....lol
Maybe You could use a smaller tank...
but it has to be able to take a lot of vacuum without imploding...

You should be able to find another tank easily...
every autostick car had one and now many are in wreckers yards....

Thanks guys.   I am on the hunt for a new one as well as the right vacuum hoses.

Hiya 73,

If you cannot source one locally (always the best way to go) vacuum tanks often pop up in the Samba classifieds.

Much has been written here about using and sourcing the correct vacuum hoses for your AutoStick.  You definitely want to search out that information.

At last I have an answer as to why when I "hold" the shifter to keep the clutch disengaged, it will eventually start to stumble at idle.  I always thought the vacuum canister was there for when engine vacuum was low and you needed to shift.  Not realizing that the connector to the intake manifold wouldn't be large enough to supply a strong enough vacuum over time.

This makes perfect sense.  Learned something new today.

I can hold My lever at traffic lights etc so the clutch has disengaged...
with the engine going... it should go virtually forever????
I've never had what You describe as stumble at idle...
the other thing is, I don't do that for very long.....
so maybe it would run out of vacuum...
although I believe that once the vacuum disengages the clutch, the servo will stay in that position....

and wouldn't use any more vacuum... until its released, and activated again...

that is how I think it would work.... same as You should have about 8 approx servo activations with the engine OFF
using the vacuum in the tank....
