Starter Replacement

After enough starts in gear, the ring gear will shear off the torqur convertor, it happened to me :(

that is a new one on Me... folks...
never ever thought of that...

When I first finished My Beetle
I forgot on more than one occasion that the engine wouldn't start in Gear... lol
and crawled under the starter motor...
using the VW jack....

YIKES....

I was always going to place a bypass switch in case the neutral switch didn't work
but never got around to it....   and they can be dangerous... ;lol

Well, it's been 3 months and the darn car is still sitting idle in the garage.  I'm going out there on Saturday morning to check the neutral safety switch again.

Isn't there a way to start the car without the key?  Can't I jump a wire or something on the starter to make sure the darn thing starts?

Another question:
So, if I remove the NSS to check it, will there be anything I have to do with the fluid?  Will it just come pouring out?  Do I have to remove the fluid first?  Or simply nothing?

Hi again Brad,
to start the engine
connect a lead to the small terminal on the starter motor solenoid.
and connect it to the battery, or if You are positive its in neutral with the e brake on..

just connect that small terminal to the large nut/terminal closeby with the battery lead...on the solenoid.. [for a second or two]

connect the + coil terminal to the battery for ignition...[choke/control valve/fuel cutoff valve] all connected to this terminal.

or if the key still turns the ignition on...
just connect that small terminal to the one from the battery for a second or so until the engine starts,,,

so, really, You could put a push button switch under the dash to do this...
I have this but it still needs to be in neutral...  lol

Thanks for all your help, Lee.

I did get the car up on a lift and rolled under to find that pesky neutral safety switch.  Of course, it's not in the most convenient place.  I cleaned the plug and cleaned the connectors and still nothing.  I am now going to do a detailed trace of the current to the starter.  I don't know what is going on.

Hi Brad
A few years ago , I did have lots of problems with My neutral switch terminals...
I had used three single terminals onto the wires and had taped them together and the wires so I couldn't
see them.. finally, I pulled it all apart and found one or more of the terminals
was loose... and also when I pressed the accelerator , it pulled the neutral wires slightly
as I had taped it to them...

once I had refitted it all again....
No Problems....

its a strange setup really...
You would think the switch would only have two terminals..
to work.... but VW used three....  lol

Hi again Brad
as the switch is on the nose, it depends how much You lift the rear of the car up...
but not much Hypoid oil should come out...  [hypoid oil is the very horrible smelling oil]
to be honest I have only taken the switch out of a spare gearbox with no oil in  it..

I don't think the neutral switch should give any trouble... IMHO..
